Harry Hofberg passes at age of 94
Harry was one of Amity’s shining spirits. We will fondly remember our cherished times with him.
For many years, Harry selflessly sat on the Board of Directors and helped to coordinate our outings and group communications. His contribution was priceless. Last year, we honored Harry as a Member for Life. Selfishly, we hoped he would hold that honor for many more years.
Harry passed away on August 11th, 2009. Harry was “Mr. Amity” and will always be remembered for his years of dedicated service to The Club. Harry was greatly loved, respected and admired by his friends in Amity. Simply stated, everyone liked Harry.
Harry enjoyed golf and although he never “shot his age”, he did play golf well past his 90th birthday. He was a an avid sportsman. Harry left behind 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Harry, we teased you because we loved you. “Stand up, Harry!”
Harry’s Funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday at B’nai Israel Congregation at 6301 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852. It is a Masonic service at 12:30pm and a religious service at 1:00. Burial will be at Judean Gardens.
Shiva will still be at 13002 North Commons Way, Rockville, MD 20854

I am saddened to hear of Harry’s passing. Harry was the ultimate Amity member. He was so much fun to have in a foursome. I all my years with Amity I never heard Harry say a negative word. He was always smiling and laughing. He was a true gentleman. I always said that when I grow up, I want to be just like Harry. Amity has lost an amazing personality. Amity should name an award or have a memorial golf outing in his name. That, in my opinion, is what Harry Hofberg meant to this organization.

You will truly be missed. You have been the heart and soul of Amity for so many years and the responsibilty you have left us is to keep Amity alive and make it what it can be and should be again.
For me, it has been one of the great honors of my life to have known you, I will never forget you. One of my greatest memories was the time you sat with my boys and told them your Babe Ruth story and to this day, they still talk about that.

Harry was an absolutely delightful man, the heart and soul of Amity. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to all members of his family.
I will miss this wonderful man. He was so very special. As a past president and event co-ordinator, I would often fight with Harry and would ask him to please be nice. You never wanted to get Harry mad. I would never shake Harry’s hand, i would give him a kiss. We will all miss this guy.
I have missed being a part of Amity the past two years, but I had missed seeing Harry more than anyone.
What a GREAT man! Always asking how everyone was with that big smile!
Harry was friends with my Dad and we shared many great memories together.
I hope the Powers that BE of Amity will dedicate something of substance in Harry’s honor and memory. How about a Member of the Year Award? No one will ever be able to match Harry’s dedication to Amity. He will truly be missed.

Harry was a gem and an entertainer at that. I will always remember him and his “my card” shtick. But most of all I will remember him as a “gutteh neshumeh”, a good soul.
Needless to say, Harry was very special to me. I have worked with him for many years. He was always kind, generous and thoughtful. He was also very meticulous. He was the best! I will miss him very much. I have lost a dear friend but I am so lucky to have met and befriended my pal Harry. We met at Ralph Rothstein’s office in the late 80s and began working together shortly after I joined Amity. We were a good team and we always got it done.
So long, my friend. You are gone but not forgotten.
One goes theough life and seldom encounters anyone quite like Harry Hofberg. Anyone who knew him surely has a “Harry story,” and I have no doubt that every one of those stories brings a smile to those who had the privilege to know him. What a gentleman. What a character. What a gem. He will be missed.

It is with great sadness that I read of your passing. You always called me Richie, when you saw me at an Amity event and it made me smile. I will miss you Harry.
When I think of Amity, I can remember seeing Harry at every event; he was the embodiment of Amity’s spirit and being.
A true gentleman, a guiding light in life’s journey, and a role model in being faithful to the organizations we build and will someday leave behind.
I am saddened by the loss for us all.

I remember just as if it were yesterday, i had just joined, Indian Spring CC, and ran into this young man, Harry Hofberg, i think he was about 75 at the time, he saw me on the putting green, came up to me and said welcome to Indian Spring, aren’t you Willie Broder’s grandson, and i said yes of course, he told me that he remembered playing with him when he was a few years younger, anyway he asked me to join him, on the course, during our 9 holes he hit me with you should join Amity, and of course i said what is Amity, he replied it is a group of young Jewish business men who play golf, eat and drink. Well, he was right on 3 of the 4 items, as it turned out when i joined i was the youngest there, but it did not matter because Harry was always there asking me how I was doing. i will miss Harry’s smiling face and easy going demeanor.
I am very saddened by the loss of my friend and mentor. It has been my honor and privilege to serve along-side of him. My deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to the Hofberg and family and friends.

Although I’ve only been an Amity member for the past 2 years, I learned quickly that your grandfather was such a warm, welcoming man. All of us have such large shoes to fill! My son and I will never forget the time we took you and Harry to the Nationals game at RFK. I wish you and the family much strength during this difficult time.
I am very sad to read of Harry’s passing. I met Harry at the Jocks HOF luncheon 3 years ago and was shocked when i learned that he might very well be the only person still around… who actually knew my best friend’s father and uncle…they all used to have bagels in Rock creek Park on the week ends back in the day.
Harry used to call me up and ask me to look up the box scores when he played baseball for the Printers and the Naval Reserve Station and email them to him..He was so proud of his baseball playing days. And i was so proud of Harry using email at 90.
My friend and i finally hooked up with Harry at his place in Rockville about a year ago..and went over to a bagel place close by to have the 2 of them talk about my friend’s dad who had passed 20 years earlier. Little did we know that Harry would tell him a story about his dad and how he had helped Harry ..that brought us close to tears…
I will miss my friend’s phone calls and seeing him at Jocks.
